Mr Jennings... title suggestions!

Postby Ted M » November 27th, 2023, 12:28 am

As we know, Mr Jennings Takes It Easy will have a followup book, the title of which was announced way back in 1997 on the jacket flap of Jennings '67 as Mr Jennings Takes It Tough.

However, that jacket flap also claimed it would be published in 1999, which, as it turned out, was a whopper of a pipe dream.

By association, that of course suggests that the then-envisioned title may be a similar will o' the wisp, and the title that actually materializes decades later in 2025+ may benefit from multiple decades of thoughtful reconsideration...

I hereby call upon the Genii community, in an act of public service, to proffer potential titles for the forthcoming Jennings book. Such titles might honor the spirit and/or parallel structure of the tough volume juxtaposed with the easy book, or perhaps the horse will throw its rider in the ditch and gallop off into the wild. Who knows?

Here are a few to start with:

Mr Jennings Takes the Hard Road

Mr Jennings Takes the Gloves Off

Mr Jennings Breaks Your Knuckles

Mr Jennings Makes You Cry

Your turn!

This very topic was discussed in great detail at a special dinner at FISM, The Hague, 2003.

Here is a title absolutly trite:

Mr. Jennings Takes His Time...

That's cool. Did anyone take notes, physical or mental? Can you share the fruits of that dinner conversation?

There is no way to change the title as Larry signed the pages for the deluxe edition in 1997, and they have the title printed on them.

The interesting and often hilarious conversation ended when Richard pointed out:

"There is no way to change the title as Larry signed the pages for the deluxe edition in 1997, and they have the title printed on them."

Since the saga of the full Jennings Trilogy is itself of inherent interest (when somebody hands you a literal shipwreck, you're obliged to spin that yarn!), it will doubtless span a number of introductory pages. The story of how the title evolved over 25+ years (with dinner conferences convened to address it, et al) would be a part of that larger tale, as would the signed pages. They would be fascinating artifacts from the moment in time when that seemed like a perfect title, and would be a testament to the fact that, not unlike Pineapple Surprise, some notions that seemed like a good idea at the time can look a little different down the road...

I needed something to match "Takes it Easy," and "Takes it Tough" was what came to mind. That's all.

Is this a subtle allusion to the fact that Jennings trained as a plumber?

Yes, but I don't think it's all that subtle . . .

Sorry to be so late responding but have had difficulty with my login. Q., i remember this dinner so well. I laughed so hard that night. Richard, we were suggesting to you some very inappropriate ideas for Chapter titles that can’t be repeated. Anyway, one enjoyable evening for sure. Look forward to the book whenever it appears.
