Iron Knot

Postby PressureFan » August 30th, 2023, 7:29 pm

I’m trying to find instructions for the Iron Knot.

Once at a county fair in Idaho, a guy showed me what he called an Iron Knot.
He said German steelworkers used it to lower items to the ground. As soon as the load touched down and the tension was relaxed the knot fell open and you could bring the rope back up. He said the knot would even hold to the breaking point of the rope.
He demonstrated with my own rope. He knotted one end around the handle of my case and lifted it up by the other end. As soon as the case touched down the knot came undone.
I remember remarking at the time that it reminded me of learning to tie a bowline with one hand. There was a loop trapped under some part. It had the look of a Tumble Hitch.
I tied it easily twice but forgot to make notes. For years I’ve kicked myself for forgetting.

That’s the same idea and result, but there wasn’t an Anglers Knot at the end. But your link had this suggestion;

Remote Release Lift Hitch - Easy Remote Release Knot - 2 Versions

The first version is the one!

Thank you Frank! I've been looking for this for 15 years.
